The Significator of the Body
The Homesteader
-Archetype Twevle-

Provides a summary of the twelve archetype of the Archetypal Mind

Small Title

Helvetica Light is an easy-to-read font, with tall and narrow letters, that works well on almost every site.

In the Law of One material, the archetypes form a fundamental part of understanding the structure and evolution of the mind, body, and spirit. The Significator of the Body represents the total body complex as it exists at any given moment. It captures the nature of the body complex as it relates to inner evolution and presents a summary of the Lesser Cycle, revealing the relationships between the Matrix, Potentiator, Catalyst, and Experience of the Body. The persona is the Homesteader—the one whose efforts are bent toward establishing and maintaining a healthy physical environment that extends to body, home, and any second home.

Overview of the Archetype

The Significator of the Body is symbolized by a man hanging by his right foot from a branch held up by two limbless trees. His left foot hangs, crossing his right at a 90-degree angle. His hands are bound together over his head, dropping four coins on the ground below. Fruit-yielding vines grow up both trees, but each vine remains on its own side without contacting the other.

Symbolic Elements

The Hanging Figure and the Bound Hands

The conscious body is bound, hand and foot. His ability to act is extremely limited: all he can do is drop the few coins (or seeds) that he holds. The free will of the Lesser Cycle is not freedom of choice; it is the freedom to be the unique self that one already is. The Potentiator of the Body can only act as it always would have acted. Its action is so constrained that all it can do is expend the meager resources of attention and observation. In bringing awareness to the present moment as we act, we pay the price of giving our attention to this moment in the physical world. That price, once paid, is fruit-bearing: it brings catalyst that may be used to clarify the nature of the self through its reflection in the physical body and environment.

The Crossed Legs and the Ankh

The crossed legs and the circular shape of the arms form a stylized ankh—the symbol of the strait and narrow path of return to the Creator, which requires a careful balance. The conscious mind’s payment and the crossed legs both signify the concept of sacrifice. Here the sacrifice is the mundane, daily sacrifice embedded into the nature of physical existence in third density. Time and energy are limited. In each moment we must choose how to spend those limited resources and, in so choosing, sacrifice all other possibilities.

The Two Trees and the Vines

The two limbless trees hold the branch from which the figure hangs. Fruit-yielding vines grow up both trees, but each vine remains on its own side. The conscious mind must choose which vine to plant and nourish and which vine to neglect. This is the sacrifice of moral polarity enacted in the physical world. Effort devoted to service on one path is an act of neglect of the other. Both vines grow because life in third density is inherently conflicted; even though one path must be chosen, the mind flits back and forth.

Functions and Dynamics

The body complex is a vehicle for discovering the nuances of thoughts, feelings, and intentions that are not available in mind alone. It is a physical home that requires maintenance, attention, and care. The Homesteader is focused on keeping a balance between the curated and the wild. Within the curated space he spends his energy keeping it orderly and well-functioning. He is always aware of his limited resources, so the mind is fixed on the economy of energy expenditure. He exists only within a dynamic flow of events, constantly juggling the needs of the day. Though his home is in constant movement, it tends toward stable balance. Experimenting with change is part of his nature; he tries small adjustments to daily protocols to see if the resulting flow of energies is more efficient. His function is to offer a stable vehicle for experience and manifestation in third density. He is motivated by the desire to economize patterns of resource expenditure. His empowering capacity is the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the moment without significantly interrupting his regimen.

The Role of Catalysts

The Significator of the Body is a static preference for engaging in the Catalyst and Experience processes in a certain way. It is the collection of biases about patterns of energy expenditure and how they can be most efficiently employed. These biases include judgments about the best use of time, the best forms of nutrition, and the best way to acquire more resources. In asserting these judgments the Homesteader presents his biases as a kind of offering—a physical manifestation of the best he has to offer. On the interpersonal level he is a Host who offers his way of living to others as a space to occupy and participate in creating. On the social level he is the Status Quo: amenable to reform but resistant to revolution, a perpetually moving machine that must be repaired amid its own constant motion.

Veiling and Unveiling

The conscious body is bound within the broader field of the unconscious body. The limited resources of attention and observation are the only means by which the conscious body can intervene. The two vines remain separate, showing that the choice of moral polarity cannot be escaped even while both continue to grow. The veil between conscious and unconscious body remains, yet the daily sacrifice of limited resources makes the nature of the body complex available for reflection. Unveiling occurs as the Homesteader’s experiments with small changes reveal more efficient patterns of energy expenditure.

Polarity and Balance

The right-hand path Homesteader is a Shelterer. He wants his home to be welcoming and nourishing to those in need. He treats his body and home with loving care for the sake of those who might be helped through his carefully established economy. He develops an ever-deeper sensitivity to the ways his action or inaction affects others and his own internal balance. The left-hand path Homesteader is a Swindler. He engages in relationships based on profitable transaction. His intention is not only to make a profit but to leave others indebted or dependent. He uses limited resources to leverage increasing power and influence. Mixed expressions are the common condition: the Homesteader attempts to feed both vines, hoping that self-interest and service will somehow converge. This mixed state sacrifices inner evolution because neither vine produces much fruit.

Integration and Transformation

The Significator of the Body cannot be directly altered by will. It is the harvest of biases that determine how the body complex engages the processes of catalyst and experience. Distorted expressions include lack of attunement to the needs of the body and the home, so that the Homesteader misjudges signals and the environment becomes increasingly disordered. Integration occurs as the Homesteader’s experiments with small changes reveal more efficient patterns and as the Traveler develops critical distance from the current configuration. When that critical distance becomes sufficient, the Transformation of the Body arises so that the Homesteader may be reconfigured.

Practical Application

In practical terms, working with the Significator of the Body involves noticing the static preferences that govern how energy is expended in the body and its immediate environments. Meditation and body-awareness practices can reveal the judgments about the best use of time, nutrition, and resources that the Homesteader presents as offerings. The work is not to force a pure polarized expression but to observe the economy of energy expenditure as it is and to allow small experiments to reveal more efficient patterns. By recognizing the daily sacrifice of limited resources and the necessity of choosing which vine to nourish, the seeker creates the conditions under which critical distance may develop and the Transformation of the Body may eventually arise.

Summary

The Significator of the Body is the total body complex as it exists at any given moment—the Homesteader whose efforts maintain a healthy physical environment through the daily sacrifice of limited resources. Through its symbolism of the hanging figure dropping coins, the crossed legs forming an ankh, and the two separate fruit-yielding vines, it shows how the conscious body is bound within the unconscious body, how attention paid to the present moment is fruit-bearing, and how the choice of moral polarity is enacted in the physical world. This archetype guides the seeker to recognize the static preferences that govern energy expenditure, to observe the economy of the home as it is, and to allow the daily sacrifice of limited resources to reveal the nature of the body complex so that critical distance and Transformation may eventually arise.
